IN THE COURTS
CHILD ABUSE CONVICTIONS: A Jacksonville man who kept his 11-year-old son
locked in a room of a Westside mobile home was sentenced yesterday to
four years in prison.
Louis Machovsky, 36, pleaded guilty in March to aggravated child abuse.
His 37-year-old live-in girlfriend, Theresa Walters, also received a
two-year sentence yesterday.
Police found the boy in June in a small, un-air-conditioned room with
only a few pieces of cake, water and a small plastic container for a
toilet.
The boy's arms, legs and buttocks were covered with bruises. Handcuffs
also were found in the home and, according to the boy, were used to lock
him to his closet door. Police also were told that the boy sometimes was
made to wear a dress.
PARALYZED MAN WINS CASE: Two
Jacksonville lawyers won a $9 million jury verdict Wednesday against
General Motors Corp. for a client who was paralyzed in a car accident
while driving his Chevy S-10 pickup in Clearwater.
Lawyers Fred Abbott and David Wiesenfeld convinced a Pinellas County
jury that their client's seat belt failed during the accident, causing
him to suffer paralyzing injuries.
A General Motors spokesman said the verdict will be appealed.
TRAFFIC CRASHES
CHILDREN HIT BY CARS: A toddler and a teenager struck by vehicles
Wednesday night remained in critical condition yesterday.
Logan Ehlers, who turns 3 in July, was hit about 7:35 p.m. on
Intercoastal Sound Drive off San Pablo Road. The toddler was visiting
family in the area.
Police said he ran in front of an oncoming van. Driver Kim Ramirez
Hoang, who lives nearby, told police she tried to stop and attempted to
swerve but was unable to avoid the crash. She and a 12-year-old
passenger were not injured. No charges were filed.
About the same time a 13-year-old skateboarder was struck in a
hit-and-run crash on Forest Boulevard near Beach Boulevard. The boy was
identified by police as Erin F. Simmons of Stone Road in Jacksonville.
Police have questioned two people, but no charges have been filed. |
