Jury awards $1.4 million in I-10 crash

Clearwater woman died in collision with two tractor-trailers.

Published: November 11, 2004

A jury has awarded $1.4 million to the parents of a Clearwater woman killed in a crash with two tractor-trailers on Interstate 10 near Baldwin.
Sara Isom, 18, was making a U-turn in the eastbound lane of the interstate in September 2001 when she was struck by a Worldwide Dedicated Services truck driven by Francis J. Thibault of Folkston, Ga. The crash pushed her into the westbound lane, where she was struck by a log truck driven by James C. Howard of Brunswick, Ga. Isom died from her injuries.
A Jacksonville jury Thursday estimated damages at $7.02 million, said attorney David Wiesenfeld, who represented Isom with his law partner, Fred Abbott. But the jury also determined Isom was 80 percent at fault, which cut the award to $1.4 million.
Jurors said Thibault was 20 percent at fault and Howard was not to blame for the fatal crash.
